Military Opposed to Ending Don't Ask, Don't Tell
When President-Elect Obama attempts to make good on his campaign promise to put an end to the “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy, he may be fighting an uphill battle within the ranks of the military. A recent survey by Military Times magazine indicates that the majority of active-duty service members continue to support the policy and are opposed to Obama’s plan to end it.
In addition almost a quarter of the respondents said that a repeal of the policy would have a negative impact on their willingness to re-enlist or extend their service, or continue a military career after their current time was up. The vast majority, however, would continue to serve.
Elaine Donnelly, president of the Center for Military Readiness, stated on Fox News that lifting the ban would have disastrous results.
However The Palm Center, a University of California-based independent think tank takes issue with the survey’s methodology and with Donnelly’s interpretation of the results. A memo issued by the center references several additional bodies of research that show a greater acceptance of gays in the military than the survey in question. They also point out that the survey was not randomized, but opted in by readers of the magazine, who tend to be older and more conservative than the military population as a whole.
And finally they remind that regardless of the amount of vocal opposition prior to other countries lifting the ban, few if any consequences have actually materialized after the fact. Canada, the UK, France and other countries have experienced little if any resignations from servicemen after lifting the bans.
Do you think that the rank and file of the military would adjust to serving side by side with "out" gays and lesbians?

The past is about to be given the slip. The boomer mindset will die with old minds while the young will do the right thing. Seriously, gays being open about being in the military will not be the end of the world.

Somebody talks to Fox news from a right wing "think" tank? Why even bother reporting it.

Ok, I know Gay.com is all about the d!ck, but could you please at least say 'servicemembers' instead of 'servicemen?' Fighting for recognition in my own community is so '90's.

What's the big deal about knowing a service person is gay or not? They still serve just like any other, and it does not demean their work. Seriously, people need to just get over it. What disastrous consequences are they talking about? They are never specific.
Posted by: shannon | January 14, 2009 at 02:58 PM
I don't think it's so much of a question of whether they would adjust...it's a question of what's the right and moral thing to do. Which, of course, is to allow gays to be out in the military. One of the few things that gets soldiers through war is the camaraderie, the ability to speak openly about your family and loved ones back home. Why should gays be prohibited from this basic right? How soldiers currently enlisted even sustain themselves is beyond me. And no, I don't think the sky will fall or pigs will fly if don't ask don't tell is repealed.

I served in the Army for 10 years. Most of those years my fellow servicemembers knew I was gay. It was never an issue. I had a guy try and out me at my last duty station. He threatened to post pictures and tell everyone. By the next day I had people coming up to me telling me that they did not care if I was or wasn't. I even served with guys that were "flaming" and noone seemed to care one way or another. I found that most people don't as long as you respect the fact that they are straight and arent trying to convert them. It is more of a to each there own attitude.

As a member of the military, i disagree with the results of the poll conducted.i know many other Gay, Lesbian, and Bisexual service members who are in units where either their command or multiple members of the unit know about their sexual orientation and it has no negative effects on the unit as a whole. I worked with a Soldier on my most recent deployment who was a conservative Mormon that found out 2 members of his platoon were gay when they were caught engaged in sexual activities. I asked him if he felt that their being gay affected their ability to accomplish their mission and perform their duties as infantrymen and whether it was a problem for him that they were and if it would effect his trust in their abilities. His answer to all those questions was NO. he was just more surprised than anything. I believe that if a small town American Mormon can accept it then the vast majority of the military will be just as accepting.

This seems kind of ridiculous. Like controversy for the sake of it. Because wether or not there's a don't ask don't tell policy, unfortunetly it will stay being run that way.

i was in the Navy back in the early eighties and I never met more gay men and women until i joined the service. These were not guys "cruising" these were guys serious about there career in the service. I think lifting this ban would bring us one step closer to legalising gay marriage.

The fact is that being queer ruins the camaraderie between us guys. But, since you're all queer on here you don't have a clue about real bonding between guys. All you guys are just hung up on your fathers, or are trying to feel like a man by STEALING a guy's masculinity by having sex with him. It's a lost cause.
Queers ruin everything they touch.

I was just denied entry to the army yesterday because of this antiquated mantra. In my past there was this police report that specifically outlined i was gay. the language of the report made me out to look like a monster as well..

Just because France the UK and Canada removed the DADT Policy is only for the basic fact that bigotry and racism isn't a factor in those countries. Americans still have hate overshadowing their judgement. People may disagree with me until its too late an you're in the position where you need protection. Just because we have our first black president doesn't mean that the same evil that has being living in the hearts of straight people doesn't exist. They're just better at hiding it. Don't be fooled our soldiers need to be protected from higher ranking officers. When I lived in San Diego I dated a gay man that was inlisted with the Navy as an MP. His main purpose for his job was to look for gay and lesbion soldiers. The only way the Navy can point these people out is by having one of our own witch hunt for gay people in the Armed Forces. Needless to say after I found out what he did I didn't want anything to do with him. He basically made a life at destroying people's lives because they're gay. I couldn't believe my ears when I found out that the armed forces recruit our own gay peers to seek each other out. That really fucken sucks if you ask me. Our country is still in the dark ages and will continue to be until we have the freedom to live and be who we are. Our sexual orientation has no baring on a person's professional performance. Until we have rights to exist these head hunters will continue to destroy our lives.

The United States military is a mercenary army used to keep resources available around the world so that Wal Mart can keep it's shelves stocked.
If this mean overthrowing democracies, destroying environments, bombing children, or torturing dissidents, then so be it.
Any fool who joins this organization will be used as a slave to these ends, and may likely end up maimed or dead.
One would hope that gay people would take advantage of this piece of bigotry and stay far away from such a mafia.
This odd trend to actually want to get married, join the military and go to church hopefully will end soon.
It's so boring and so last century.

I know for a fact, from first hand experience that no one in the military really cares if you're gay/bi. After coming out to fellow servicemembers, they were rather upset that i hadn't been totally honest with them. When you've worked with your brethren for so long comraderie extends beyond sexual preference, race, gender, and so forth. Now that they know, we're even closer, and i wouldn't even think of trying to get into their pants like a horny little queer. These are men and women i trust with my life. Why would I ruin a bond that my life depended on by having one night of mundane pleasure. It generates awkward feelings in the work place. Also out here on the battle field, there are more str8's screwing around and wrecking things than there are gays doing it. So speak wisely among the ranks. Don't talk about something you don't know about. Over and Out!

I have only been back from Iraq for about six weeks and I know that most of the people that I served with over there knew I was gay. But that did not stop us from doing are job. Hell most of them was there for me when my ex and I slip up. I think that it is just what u do for each other. I know that I have made some friends for life from there. I even know that i could tell most of them anything and they was cool with it. So if u ask me about don't ask don't tell I will tell u that I don't really think that most people care about that. As a matter of a fact my Platoon Sgt and Company XO had a talk to me about me having sex with a guy in Iraq and they was worried that they was going to have to let me go from the service and they really did not want to because they said that I was a good at what I do. But I am not sure how they got around the Don't Ask Don't Tell Policy but I know that some how they did. But I think that the biggest thing that we have to get past is the fact that most of the str world out there just thinks because u are gay that u want every guy most of them that think this way are the ones that have problems getting the girls too. I think that is so funny and I don't understand why they can not look at it like the fact that just because they like girls does not mean that they want to sleep with all of them well in some cases I guess that they do but I know that for gay men that it just not the case. I am sure that if anyone knows me they would know that I am one of the guys that could lose myself in the world of not understanding why the armed forces teaches things about being truthful and then they want all the gay people in the military to hide who they really are and live a lie. And if they are making us live a lie how can we ever really trust them at all. If anyone would like to tell me ur comments on this issue I would love to hear them. Just right send me a email on gay.com I am gaysailorboy.

I'm sure that members of the Armed Forces, back in 1948, also opposed integration of blacks into the military. The survey is a reflection of the culture in the current military. It is a warped culture and simply needs to be changed. I pray Obama has the courage to do what Harry Truman did in 1948, and dispite Generals testifying before congress, and surveys claiming the denigration of the military, he will issue an order from the Commander-in-Chief and tells them TOO BAD!
Posted by: tomriddlesmate | January 15, 2009 at 08:36 AM
Truman desegregated the military when Jim Crow was still legal in the South.
The President is the Commander-in-Chief, and the Generals are there to obey him. The President's word is the law as far as the UCMJ is concerned. The military will adjust, no matter what he directs them to do.

Yes, just a guy.
Why would being gay interfere with securing oil reserves for Exxon?
What does being gay have to do with bombing innocent people from high tech jets?
What does being gay have to do with making sure Halliburton turns a profit this year?
How many Iraqis did you kill, who were gay? Do you think they minded that you are gay?
Posted by: queerplanet | January 15, 2009 at 09:38 AM
Ok I served in the military and to be honest the only people who still care about serving with a gay or lesbian in the military is the upper chain of command or the men and women who were raised thinking that gays and lesbians are wrong. I was out until a certain horrible incident happened except to a few of my ship mates (hints the screenname) they were mostly like, "Ok, and your point." And it was fine, I do think most of the guys who i had gone through boot camp and school with who were on my ship already knew i was but didnt say anything. To sit there and say that homosexuals have to stay closeted in the military is wrong for a fact that damn we are fighting to save a country, for freedom. But I have learned a terrible lesson from all of this. It is why fight for a country to have freedom if they do not want freedom for you (as a homosexual) so I will never give the us of a my person again to give people the freedom of bigotry.

It really dose not matter to me. I know there are a lot of GAY'S in the Military. Ever rank from a privet to a four star general. I use to live next to Fort Bening GA.

I was in the military marine corps and the army. Never seen so many gays in the closet. very sad. Ikept to myself. I seen alot of officers and others who tried to get me in the sack. None of my business. I talked to a few recruiters and they have few enlisttes for fear of death, The gays and the woman must take up the slack to protect this country. What mor can I say. It's the gays and the woman who are doing alot of the fighting. alot of them closet cases. With womans lib. who can blame them. The men lose and they know it. They look for safer sex and monetarily a man. Cant lose your life savings on that now can you?? I think it's the womans lib that make men gay, or who want to be. I don't think alot of them are gay, but will go there for this fear, and a great relaxation of a feeling of getting your rocks off withoug gettin losing everything you own or would own. 18 yrs is a long time for child support and the men know that ! It's not a question of gay !!! Alot of men do it and they're not ! It's a matter of getting your rocks off, that's all.
This is not just the military, It's all the cities and life in the world. It's a fact ! I have seen it too many times. How sad ! woman lib has taken alot of men out of the men. The courts agree with the woman. The men are out to the dog house They have no choice in the matter at all. It's a lose lose situation and they know it ! The men know that also. I don't want to be with a man, but then, do I have a choice???? I think that mens sex is pretty sleazy. I would never lick some elses crack............forget it !

I'm a gay combat veteran (Iraq 2003) and I can tell you first hand that nobody cared if the person next to you is gay.
Any actual disruptive issues can and should be handled as disciplinary matters. The military already has a zero-tolerance policy toward sexual harassment, no matter the orientation.
The current policy makes servicemembers subject to blackmail by those hostile to the USA; gay servicemembers with high security clearances are even more vulnerable if they are forced to remain closeted. To me, that's a far greater danger than the thought that a handful of people would be uncomfortable serving with a queer.
It's time to formally open the military to overtly gay Americans. Will Obama risk political capital and force the issue? No way. He'll claim there are much bigger issues facing us and will put the issue on the back burner, same as Bill Clinton.
Posted by: Gay Veteran | January 15, 2009 at 02:26 PM
It's time for all those "brave" soldiers to show some REAL courage and come out of the closet. Until they show REAL courage I think it's foolish to ask others to help first.
Posted by: Sargon Bighorn | January 15, 2009 at 02:51 PM
Understandably, I don't want good order and discipline to fall to the wayside. At the same time, I don't feel gay/lesbian service members should be discharged for their orientation. Is there a middle road here? Agreed, we should drop the Article concerning homosexuality from the UCMJ. Instead, we should fall on the same personal and regulatory guidance governing heterosexuals; that of morality, character, patriotism, general discipline, and military bearing. It is these principles which have made us soldiers/sailors/airmen/and marines for all these years. These principles which have called us to serve our country, despite the cost of our freedoms. Despite your branch of service, or orientation, we stand together on the fence becuase thats what we do, and its who we are.

I had wanted to be an officer in the Navy ever since I was in 3rd grade. My grandfather was Navy, my dad was Navy, two uncles were Navy. I was in ROTC and kept fighting my coming out in college. I finally realized my orientation was not going to change. My longest dream was not to be. I would never serve a country that considered me less than human. I am every bit a patriotic American and therefore I do not have submit myself to the humiliation of acting like what/who I am is something to be ashamed of. I tell any gay person that wants to serve DON'T until your treated equal.
Posted by: Chemosh | January 15, 2009 at 06:04 PM
Of course DADT is wrong. Everyone who wants to serve should be able to, but there is no equality in America, especially in the military which has always attracted the most ultra-conservative, hate filled elements in society, and so has always been a hotbed of bigotry and homophobia. What I've never been able to understand is WHY any gay person with even a shred of self respect would WANT to serve a country that denies them basic civil rights and says to them that as a gay citizen they are unfit and unworthy to serve. It should be painfully obvious that it is NOT gays who are unworthy to serve America, but America who is unworthy to be served by gays!

That story makes things seem much worse than they are. First, the Military Times survey is as unscientific as you can get--it's simply asking people write in their opinions, as opposed to being a random sampling. As for Elaine Donnelly, she has no relationship to the military, no academic or governmental standing--she's simply a nut who's made this her pet project.

Hey U Americans, The Canadian gay guys in the forces got married (legally) and went off to fight YOUR war in Afganistan! (107 dead)(Check out Highway of Heros on U-tube)
What the fuck is your problem?
If U are afraid or getting raped put a lockable butt plug in there!
Get over it!
Gays are Gays, and yeh they are still men or women and can fight (probably better) just like anyone devoting their life to their country so shut the fuck up and let the gays come out of the closet and even marry if they want.
We in Canada don't care what your sexuality is all we care about is respecting others no matter what!
Don't believe me? This is an open invitation to come on up to Gay Pride last week of June and join approx a million gay men and women enjoy a free life openly!

People are so full of shit. "Oh I can't serve with a homosexual/lesbian." Get over yourself. Like we really care about you. Its just the same thing with blacks when there was segregation and racism its pratically the same thing. Its history repeating itself its enevitable and the longer people prolong it the more people get impatient.
Sure whatever we have standards you guys have standards. I'm in the military the only ones that really care are the ones who are ignorant to the lifestyle. Instead of shunning us or ridiculing us how about you get to know about the life style. If you guys weren't so curious then we wouldnt have to tell you squat. If you don't want to know then dont ask the damn question.
I believe an army times survey said that 78 percent would leave or consider not re-enlisting yea they also said that about women and blacks. And in fact that only a small indent of the numbers was effected. If and when this "policy" gets revoked the numbers will probably surpass the numbers that are exiting the military due to "homophobia". So why not revoke this policy. And stop acting like being gay is a crime.
All it is, is a classic version of liberals fighting conservatist and in the civilian side religion trying to squeeze in the cracks of government. Religion and government should keep their bounderies. And all you religious fucks need to stop trying to regulate shit and let it be. We keep to ourselves you keep to your church and we can all be happy. Oh yea and instead of worrying whose sleeping with who how about you start focusing on the starving kids on the street or the people who have kids dying in the hospital with cancer and stop trying to persue whatever your trying to persue.

In response to the obvious Closeted gay man, WAY up in the conversation here, We "QUEERS" know alot about bonding, since we barely ever can bond to the straight men in our lives, we tend to form long lasting and emotionaly deep relationships with the gay men in our lives that we are NOT having sex with.
As far as men and woman of the gay persuasian joining our military? All I have to say, is that anyone, who wishes to honorably serve this nation, protect its borders, and defend the constitution, should have the right to do so, and not have it questioned simply because of who they wish to love.
Simply, service is giving back to the country that gives them so much.
And btw Mr Cloested Queer, we don't ruin everything we touch, we just make it so you cant get laid, cause the ladies like us WAYYY better than you! Toodles!

The Kids serving today as opposed to 10 to 20 years ago, are more exposed & accepting of the Homosexual Lifestyle.
I really don't think it really matters who gots your back on a battlefield now does it.
But I have difficulty understanding why Gay People would even want to fight for some "Freedoms" of the US's false Equality of Civil Rights which don't completly apply to everyone.
Canada & some other countries of the FREE world are looking better every day.

I was in the US Navy for 4 years. Being a gay male serving my country, I had to be quiet about my sexual orientation. Service members that were close in rank to me knew about my sexual orientation. I had a lot of interaction with other countries military members while serving overseas for 2 years. Those countries, Canada, Australia et al that have an open door policy on allowing gays and lesbians to serve openly had no problem working with their heterosexual counterparts.
I think it is about time that the United States has made the decision to lift this horrendous Don't Ask, Don't Tell policy.
4 months to completing my service I was outed by another servicemember and was discharged early.
The military was my life, I would have made a career out of it. If this policy would have been lifted during my time in the service I may have been allowed to continue my service without worries of being harassed on a daily basis.
I applaud President Elect Obama for standing out and making the decision to lift the policy. Regardless of what current service members think or whatever stupid polls say, I doubt that any gay service member would ever flaunt their homosexuality in their heterosexual counterpart's face.

I am a Navy Combat Photographer and have seen my share of violence and war. I have seen many people not care who's who and where there from what they do. They do care about if you got my back I got yours.
This DADT needs to be expelled and done away with with-in the first 100 days. It would be the betterment of our country to do so and put us with the Jones’ since we have to make sure we keep up with them on every other facet.

I am currently active duty US Navy. DADT is a rediculous policy going against everything the military teaches. The Navy's motto is, "Honor, Courage, Committment." How can I have honor if I am not able to openly express myself. How can I show courage, if I cannot let others know who I am protecting, and how can I commit to something that doesnt commit to me? I know from personal experience that no one cares whether you are gay/bi/lesbian. I just recently went through a break up and during this time I fell apart. My ex was also Navy, working in the same command. My LPO knew something was wrong, and figured out I just ended a relationship. Without hesitation, I just told him I was gay. He said, I don't care. Are you going to be ok? He didnt care. As of now, I am pretty much openly gay. Most of my fellow shipmates know I am gay, including the Khakis. As long as you do your job, and do it well. They are happy to have us beside them. After all, I just got Junior Sailor of the Year for my region, and both the Blue Jacket of the Year for the region, and Senior Sailor of the year of the region, were also gay. Obviously we're doing something right. The men of the military really dont care if they are serving next to a gay guy. And for people to say, "I dont want a gay guy next to me checkin me out when were on the battlefields.." Oh, come on now. Do you (men) check out the girl next to you out there? Stop thinking that just because we're gay, we want to sleep with you. 99% of the time, that is not the case. Get over yourselves...It isn't a matter of if DADT is repealed, it is now a matter of when. And, it really looks like its going to be 2009! Lets hope!

Gays serve openly in Israel, and you can't tell me there's another nation in the world that depends more on its military than Israel. Any objections to openly gay servicemembers is just plain prejudice.
Posted by: greyhound1954 | January 16, 2009 at 06:20 AM
I do understand that the DADT was intended to protect gay servicemen and women from being harassed, but it is a poor policy that never should have been enacted; and certainly, if it was able to be challenged in the Supreme Court could be declared unconstitutional as a violation of our rights under the 14th Amendment. I know several gay servicemen and women and the anti-gay sentiment isn’t nearly as bad as it was even a year ago. Besides, we all swear an oath to support and defend the constitution of the United States, and DADT is unconstitutional on its face because it denies gay men and women equal protection under the UCMJ and the law.

i'm just crossing my fingers and sitting tight until my gay and lesbian brothers and sisters can be out and proud while serving their country. It's 15 years of forcing people to stay in the closet that has helped so many young soldiers not make steps in the journey of self-discovery alongside their peers. It's about to be over!!!!!!!!!! next up is DOMA, look it up on Wikipedia, just reading it made my heart hurt.

Well, considering the state of our military, I would encourage lifting the DADT policy. It would encourage more homosexual patriots to join. At the same time, I think that soldiers who are comfortable would work better. It's a tough situation. But, lifting the ban would be more symbolic of America and it's freedoms, giving our service members the right to choose whether or not they want to come out, and giving our service members the right to choose whether or not they want to participate in the organization for any reason. . . including homophobia. I hate that homophobia exists, and rules so many decisions, but it is our rights as Americans to choose what we want to do, and can base those choices on our personal opinions, fears, likes, etc.

you know, I really don't care if you're gay or not in the military. If you're normal. Yes, there is the normal acting male that is gay. I am one of them. I act very straight. I guess that what people worry about are the abnormal ones who act like queens joining the service. This would be very wrong. I can just see a private benjamin (man in drag) and oh they'll get worse. You'll then have to watch so they don't molest your little boys, they'll be on the prowl I'm sure. Some of them will be even doing it in the showers. No, I don't think so. straights have their rights too and it's too bad the the bad gays (not the good ones) will create much chaos in the military. Sad but true. I think the gays understand this but will not admit to it. All gays are not the same. some want romance and are monogomous and then there are the ones who screw 10 or more men a day if not more. some of them can't get enough at all. That's why aids came about. always someone new and never the same person. big time sluts. That's why it turns me off. always sex and never any type of holding or relationships. Then there are the perverted gays, and lets not go there. I would be typing forever on this one.
To put it simply, most gays are sluts, and a few of them are as normal as the straights, but I am not saying that straights don't have their sexual devients. It's just that theirs are so few compared to the gays. That's the problem ! I'm sure everyone could agree with that!

It angers me that during peace time if your openly gay you can not service, but during war time the military puts don't ask don't tell on the back burner. If it weren't for gays serving in the military today, there wouldn't be no one left to fight and defend this country.

I think the words fox news in this article says enough. The stalwarts brought us such things as Bush winning when he lost the election as well as 30 seconds of world news review just to make sure we have more than ample time to cover kiki the water skiing chipmunk. The facts clearly leaned towards a greater acceptance of homosexuality in the military as well as the open enlistment of gay in the military currently. If gay men and women want to lay down their life for this country in vain they should be given this opportunity like the rest of the listless unemployed Americans who have no choice but decide between a death sentence or a life in servitude on welfare in poorer and poorer regions.

fighting for your country in a war situation is one thing. Living the life in peacetime, and what your sexual cravings are is another. It's kind of like some of the catholic preists who tour the world and only look for the poor male children for only lust which is a fact ! too bad, but it's true. what would the gay child molestor man do if given enough freedom??? of course all paid for by the govt. I don't even want to think about it. Makes me just sick to think of what they'd do if given this freedom. Gays should be screened out if given the opertunity to serve. If they're perverts then don't allow it ! If they're not into children sexually and are normal that would be ok. There has to be limits, and I'm afraid that the sickos will take advantage of this oportunity to take full advantage of it, at the govts expense of course. They'll be there I can assure you. Too bad for the gays (the good ones). The good must always pay for the bad ones. That's why we have so many laws........It's the bad ones who make it bad for everyone. Like the minorities for instance.......... I seen so many good black people, and good cuban, and mexicans ect. They were like my brothers, and then came the assholes. The haters of whites and anything else that came along. They are the ones who make it bad for the world. The drug dealers are a real minus, as well as the pimps who sell their drug induced victoms(underage of course) but who supports this kind of evil?? YOU do ! YOu buy the drugs and get your rocks off on a little girt, or boy. If you're so innoscent then why do you do these things?? YOU are just as guilty. Stop buying drugs, and stop buying prostitutes, especially if they are underage and you will see a new world and these assholes will be out of business because there will be no money out for them. Let them get a job like the rest of us. You people who support such filth are just as guilty. Perverts in the dark ! wake up call man. Do you realize how many people are killed each year bacause of your little one night stand?? and also the safety of your lives and your families just because you want a fast fuck???? How stupid are you eh?? Let's stop supporting this low life ok??? They'll soon be out of business

I would like all men to stop taking drugs and buying whores. You aint that ugly where you can't find someone. buying drugs will only get more drive by shootings and breakins and vandelizm, car stealing robbing of the elderly and perhaps you. When you buy drugs you support all of this, and for what? your little high??People are getting wacked off every year because of your support. Did you know that, or didn't you care?? perhaps your own family. Turn them in and don't support such evil. It's gettin worse and now I must lock my doors because of yous. Let's all get together and stop supporting these creaps. We can do it! Do you have any idea on all the young men and woman who go to jail each year because of drugs?? YOu are behind it if you buy them. spread the word my freinds. enough is enough. You can do your part by spreading the word and not participating in it. spread this word on the internet and all people you know. Let's live safe and change this world.........It's obvious that the cops arent gonna do it. It has to be by us! This would truely give the gays a big plus in this society. We will be the saviors of the lowest statistics in america because of your help. Ain't that cool............ think about it ! Do it now !

I am in the military and have served in the middle east and still do. Almost all the guys I know don't really care what you are as long as you do your job and don't act like the token fag they show on most TV shows. I am out to only a few of my military friends and they don't care at all. Repeal it, Don't repeal it, it doesn't really matter, because people are going to stay in the closet whether they want to or not. To repeal it means those that are not gay have to except that and not disscriminate. I honestly don't care if they do or not, I'm gonna keep doing what I have been doing the last 12 years in the military. My job!

I just got out of the military. Most of those guys who are bashing gays in the military are retarded. They are like what if they hit on me?
When I was in the military I had more str8 guys come on to me than anything. This little flamer friend of mine who I loved dearly taught me that if people didn't know you were gay you'd never get any. I got so many knocks on my door at 2 AM it was ridiculous. Whorish as it sounds I really respected peoples sexuality and to me that's what matters. And OMG I miss all my str8 friends so much. We were a really close unit. It was really sad when I got out.

"in the military which has always attracted the most ultra-conservative, hate filled elements in society,"
What a load of stereotyped, thoughtless bullshit.
I'm sure you think you're right but you just don't have a clue.
I dare you, I double-dare you to come up with any recent academic study to back that crap up.
You're at least as bad as any homophobe, if not worse because you should know better.

I was in the service in the early sixties. Very few people were out then. One guy got outed and was drilled out of the service. The guy who outed him was bragging about it and wound up getting his nose broken. He fast became the most unpopular guy on the base. There was a sense of honor in those days regardless of what one was or did as long as he was an o.k. guy and did his job.
