See Who Made The Prop. 8 "Dishonor Roll"

Prop8focusA couple of weeks ago, you heard about all of those financial supporters of the measure that banned gay marriage in California who had filed a lawsuit to keep their campaign finance records hidden away from public view. The poor souls claimed they were the victim of harassment.

Bless their hearts... I'm sure that none of us would have any clue on how it feels to be harassed or threatened for having such strong and compelling beliefs about the way one should live their life.

They had further said that businesses employing people who contributed to the Prop. 8 campaign were threatened with boycotts. Hmmm. That sounds hauntingly familiar -- on top of the fact that gay marriage foes had most definitely used campaign finance records during the height of the debate to threaten gay rights supporters.

Last week, a federal judge denied the request to keep their finance books (and the names of donors) locked away. U.S. District Judge Morrison England Jr. concluded that the California Political Reform Act of 1974 must stay intact as it is.

Yeson8__205 Now, the full list of donors who supported Prop. 8 has been posted to the California Secretary of State's official website. You could spend hours clicking around the site looking at the data of those who donated a staggering $36 million that ended same-sex marriage rights in the state.

One of the best versions I've seen is the Californians Against Hate.com "Dishonor Roll", which exposes many of the high rollers who donated more than $5000.00. They have taken public information from the California Secretary of State’s Office and added telephone numbers and web sites to the list. Also included is commentary on some of the more interesting and controversial donors.

So, to all those foes of gay marriage who wanted to implement your double standard by changing the current laws to keep your finance books tightly closed, I say to them in the words of one certain mayor: "It's inevitable. This door is wide open now. It's gonna happen. Whether you like it or not."

Is it just me, or do we need more worthwhile articles amd headliners like this one featured on gay.com's home page. I am habitually disgusted at the perverted nature of some of the commentary gay.com chooses to make prominent to members, guests and the like. I do not care about saluting straight athletes, how they look, dress, pose and whether or not they're gay. I do not care about glorifying a homophobic pop-culture as ours. What I care about is what should really matter on here: OUR FIGHT FOR EQUALITY. So please, Gay.com, be a little more insightful, educated and mature in the articles you post for us to read.. and avoid any nonsensical "straight guy"/pop-culture adoration. There's enough of that stuff to go around.. what we need now most of all are pieces of real, substantial work that spark worthy conversation and keep the fight for equality alive.

Tim

and shame on the 9% who voted as indifferent. your apathy and silence is a core devastation and embarassment to gays everywhere.

Sean

Take the time to defend your rights! Everyone, please look at the list of individuals and companies who supported the Prop 8 measure. Be vocal about your protest of these companies and why. If they fear our boycott, and so they should, let's prove there is strong reason to fear it. They may prevent us from making certain choices today, but we can make choices that will effect them. Be proud of who you are and let them feel our pain.

David

I find it interesting that the ones that were trying to shame the supporters of the passing of gay marriage are not so willing to be exposed as those that help end gay marriage.

David

Howard "Howie" Ahmanson, Jr.'s company Fieldstead & Co. gave: $100,000 on 2/22/08, $200,000 on 2/29/08, $100,000 on 3/24/08, $100,000 on 8/26/08, $100,000 on 8/28/08, $300,000 on 9/25/08, $95,000 on 10/18/08, $250,000 on 10/27/08 and $150,000 on 10/22/08. Odd, with the recession going on he was so generous to give of his company and himself for such a stupid cause. I hope he goes bankrupt and his company is audited!!!

Jeff

Let the boycots and e-mails begin, I for one have already started.

Hammer H.

This list means nothing to me. These people have every right to donate there money to whatever cause they wish. Its also no one's business and this is complete invasion of their privacy. This is America and we vote and the majority wins. Thats the process. Sometimes you win, sometimes you loose. Gay people are looking at this as one more "gotchya". I can just imagine all the militant gay people out there harrassing these people. If this harrassment was directed at them they would be up in arms with rage but when they do it to others its justified. What a double standard and how sad.

Justin

This is awful. Not giving your patronage to a company that supported prop 8 is one thing. However, posting private citizen's residential information, is unethical and counterproductive. Once again gay.com makes me (a gay man) less sympathetic to our own causes. Though gay.com did not create the site, it did post a link.

"It strikes me as quite ironic that a group of people who demand tolerance and who claim to be for civil rights are so willing to be intolerant and trample on other people's civil rights."

blah

Your poll doesn't accurately fit my feelings. I believe that the donors had every right to donate to what they wanted without it being publicized. Even though I don't agree with what they donated to, I do think this is an invasion of their privacy. What's next?

David

I read the list of those that donated to the act of ending the gay marriage, and, I can safely say, that individuals and companies that back such finances as keeping the man woman marriage thing going as just that, yeah, ok. Those places, such as churches, fine. I can also understand such places as law offices, though I would be boycotting them. However. Were I to be a retired individual and the company that handles my retirement invested in a cause like this, to end gay marriages, I would be outraged. How is stopping gay marriages going to benefit my retirement fund? I am also not so favorable of purchasing items from retailers that are bold enough to back such items.

I was not prepared to see the list of people that were listed. I know some of the corporations that were listed. I will make sure that I do not do business with them in the future.

I find it odd that such ideology still exists. I was so hoping that people would learn from Blacks finally getting their voices heard (YEAH!!!) Jewish, Native Americans (YEAH!!!)...oh, yeah...women...so why are people so pig headed when it comes to gays?

Steve

First off this should be important to all of us. It is not an invasion of privacy...this is our system of checks and balances to ensure no wrong doing (as the Mormon Church may be guilty of...with respect to IRS rules). It is the law that this information must be public record. It's the chance you take by making political contributions.

Secondly, I vote not only as part of the political system, but also vote with my wallet. Many of the larger companies on this list have a no-tolerance attitude with regard to discrimination. What does it say when employees of theirs are not getting that message. It DOES reflect upon their businesses, as well. It is the risk that they take for continuing to employ such individuals (failure to maintain my business going forward...that's MY RIGHT!).

Cee

Some of you need to wake up. Stop worrying about these people's privacy and what's ethical. They donated millions of dollars in fear that gay people will be recognized as equal. It's not about marriage. They hate you. A person who does not want you to be happy is a person that hates you. It's about their agenda.

David

Justin,
if your comment was aimed at me about "Howie" Ahmanson, Jr, and his activities with his money being his own private business, I was trying to show that he took from his company $1,395,000 (that's one million, three hundred and ninety five thousand dollars) to back his hate of gays. I did not cook that up, go to http://www.californiansagainsthate.com/dishonorRoll.html

It is a link that gay.com did not create out of spite, it is one of those new features in society, the right to know. Knowledge is a really powerful thing. Use it for ones embetterment.

Sargon Bighorn

To: The Author (and readers)

I harp on this point because it has to be harped on. STOP using the loaded term "Gay Marriage" please. NO ONE NOT ONE PERSON is asking for a "Gay Marriage". Please just slow down and THINK (shocking request I know) about what that term suggests. It suggests a special right; A "Gay Marriage". I don't want a "Gay Marriage" I want a marriage.

The Radical Religious Extremists coined the terms "Gay Marriage" and "Same Sex Marriage" to suggest Gay-Americans were asking for special rights. So THERE FORE every time any one uses the term "Gay Marriage" they are asking for something special; as a Hetero Couple will not be getting a "Gay Marriage". Call it what it is "Marriage" or "Civil Marriage". Make it a CIVIL RIGHTS struggle and NOT a "Gay Marriage" struggle.

tyler

TO THE FOLLOWING: Hammer H, Justin, BLAH(intelligent name eh?) and others like these "fine" individuals...this is what politics are all about.
It is NOT an infringement of their privacy you nelly sissy boys....it is called disclosure...transparency...very legitimate things we need in politics! After 8 years of secrecy, lying and bullshit from the Bushes it is very appropriate to have an "openness" here.
Has anyone noticed how many churches are having problems? Maybe karma is coming back for retribution.
I am not in favor of "gay marriage" so to speak. I like "civil unions".
Has anyone read the WIKI on that Fieldstead & Co???? He is a churchy who narrowly refused to comment on stoning homos!!!!!!! He and his wife and following wants to have the USA follow the Biblical doctrine emphatically!!!!!!!
And you prissy bitches think the "donors" should have privacy!?
Information, knowledge, TRUTHFULNESS are extremely important! With assholes like the Ahmanson's....it's nice to know who would like to see us killed! Knowing who the donors are just may keep us as gay men alive!
Stick that in your bonnets Hammer H and etc!!!!!!!!

Leeeeo

People who donate large sums of cash to political campaigns have no right to privacy. It is pretty funny imo, that the very same demographics who demanded transparency in government and spearheaded many of these public finance laws are now shocked that their donation info is made public.

Whoops?

It is true that people have every right to their opinions and can donate to any cause they choose. But it's also the right of all of us to use publicly disclosed information about bigoted, hateful, pieces of crap, who unabashedly parade around as the epitome of moral decency, to make informed decisions about where we shop, pray, and solicit.

It's truly sad to see hatred reflected in dollar amounts. Eye-opening too. I hope they all get audited.

WWJD?

It's a rhetorical question of course. Jesus wasn't a warmonging bigot. He wouldn't be spending the pennies and nickles of sheepish masses to foster an agenda of hate.

I echo the sentiment that we need more substantitive stories like this on the site.

I think I'm going to compose a letter and send it to as many on the list as possible.

They can drop it in their prayer basket for all I care. But, hey, if thousands of us participate, at the very least, they'll need a larger basket.

Logan

While its not ok to harm these people, it is perfectly ok to have theiry bigotry exposed and not give them any business. They would harm us. People like this don't want their views exposed, but check out the list.. the old biddie that was one of the largest donors, her husband invented the lighted car sun visor is a player for focus on the family and they own blackwater international ( a nice company). I'm glad the judge ordered their information released. The only way we are going to get the equality we are given under the constitution is to fight for it. Exposing these bigots for what they are is the first step. These christian people would do some not so christian things to us given the opportunity. They would go further than deny our rights they would deny our life.

ArgggTheMoney

How long does it take YOU to save $5,000? What suprises me most about the 'donors'is the company, what they do or not do for work, how does a retiree, welder, engineer, long shoreman, plummer, electrician, home maker, a quilter?...etc, plop down 1K, 5K, 10K, 25K just for this cause? Somebody is making WAY too much money!, I could think of better uses for this amount of money, such as FOOD, CLOTHING, HOUSING, even a second home or car, esp if Im retired or make quilts for a living, so much for medicare in retirement. A tax deduction maybe? Is this charity? the church offering plate? On the credit card? These donors were really suckered by the 'people who scare other people', where is their money now and whos livin it up in the Carribean about now? Sickos and there mismanaged mounting debt of money. I'll take my 5K and go on a cruise thank you. I wonder how the 'pros' are faring?

Jim

This is absolutely Disgusting! Its Disgusting that there are still Close Minded Bigots who have nothing better to do than shove their noses in other peoples private lives. If that isnt enough they also try to control what other people do or how they live their lives! I cant believe how disgusting some people in this world are! How Lowly evolved some people really are.

I also see some of the gay community who sit their on their butts and do absolutely Nothing to stand up for their rights or even register to Vote. People its time to take a stand! dont just sit there on your duff and expect others to stand up for you... You have to rally together and stand up to the close minded bigots! the ones who have nothing better to do than to have a Vote on " our " marriage! Its time to stop the Discrimination! Its Childish!

I would like to thank gay.com for posting the above article.. Now I know which Companies I will be boycotting and sending out letters to.

sirald66

For the purpose of boycotting, I am totally for reporting people of authority such as business owners, managers and others that control the intake of our money for their cause.

Bry

I fully believe in the effectiveness in boycotting supporters of Prop 8. However I cannot tolerate people who cross the line and use personal information to send hate mail and intimidation. Just because the other side fights with hate and lies it does not mean we have to sink to their level. We are better than that, we can still kick their asses at the ballot box and in the courts.

EndHate

"Californiansagainsthate.com" Supposedly this website is about opposing hatred. Yet the keywords used are, boycott, hatred, bigotts, opponents. It is just a fancy tool to be used in targeting hatred at others. Is the answer to oppose hatred with more hate?

As a group I thought we as GLBT support civil rights, yet we refuse to respect or even understand others beliefs when they are divergent from ours. I mean we are dealing with people's core beliefs and comfort levels. People who voted yes for Prop 8 have been taught these values from birth. In fact probably most of us were taught these values as children. How does vindictively targeting these people with boycotts, forcing people from their jobs and perpetuating hate crimes of vandalism, anthrax scares and physical violence further our cause. Is this really the way to help change these people's viewpoint?

Real change only comes with open dialogue but until we spend less time trying to persecute others for their beliefs how will we ever be able to convince them to support our civil rights?

I support transparency in voting and election issues. I support protecting our civil rights. But I cannot and will not support another campaign of hate.

Shocked

I do not see why anyone wold think its right to harass people for their political points of view. So is it only appropriate to support causes of which you approve? What is this facism?

tim

PLEASE LET ME KNOW WHERE TO SEND MY DONATION TO ALL THESE WHINNING SNICKERING FAGGOTS WHO HAVE NOTHING BETTER TO DO THAN COMPLAIN ABOUT THIS -- THEY SHOULD HAVE BEEN OUT HAVING A GOOD TIME AT THE BATHHOUSES AND STREET CORNERS INSTEAD OF WORRING ABOUT THIS BULLSHIT == WHO CARES == YES FAGS GETTING MARRIED,,,,HA HA HA,,,THE ONLY ONES THAT WOULD PROFIT WOULD BE THE DIVORCE LAWYERS -- LIKE GAYS CAN STAY TOGETHER FOR MORE THAN A FEW FUCKS == WELL IM OFF TO GET SOME HOLE -- GAY LIFE IS GREAT -- NO COMMITTEMNTS AND ALL SEX

Leeeeo

All that is necessary for evil to triumph is for good men to do nothing.

It's neither fascist or harassing to express oneself politely in this country.

Adrian L

This list of contributors is a powerful tool used properly. We can organize campaigns to boycott businesses, we ask our government to rescind the tax freedoms of religious organizations who participated in the campaign in any way as well fine those who participated in those campaign messages directly misleading the public on what they were voting for. We have a voice we can use it and as far a majority vote i am not sure 52 percent is a good percentage I would have asked for a two thirds majority on issues that determine the rights of minorities. Thomas Jefferson said that we should not turn to the majority to vote on rights of the minorities. He may have something there.

Xerophil

Way to go! Let us know who those deny our rights are. So we can deny them as well! If we don't care about our rights, no one else will. If we yield this time, what else will we give up next time? Our rights to travel? to work?

James Deese

So does this mean we are not allowed to get married in cali anymore

nate

Personally i think that all donations should be public information. Boycotting those who gave? i'm still undecided on that and here's why. Living in Idaho Falls all my life i know all to well what the stance of the Vandersloots would be. (the CEO's wife Belinda donated $100,000.) They are the one of the owners of Melaleuca. I would be conflicted about boycotting them just for the reason that i know personally 2 of the other family's that also own Melaleuca. Those family's know that I am gay and accept and support me fully and the rights that i seek to one day have. For this reason i would have to say that the acts of one does not give the whole picture of the company they own or run. There are also a lot of LGBT people that sell for Melaleuca which boycotting this company would also hurt our own.

Just trying to give a different perspective on things yet still understand the views of those who say boycott.

Furry

Funny... the first on the list on the "Dishonor Roll" is the Knights of Columbus...LOL..i wonder what they will do with their members who are cocksuckers...hang them?... met lots of older married men who are members of the Knights of columbus..great cocksuckers!and yes...from CT

oldkingtroll

I completely agree that the issue is one of transparency in our political processes. Privacy revolves around our personal lives; it does not extend to everything we do. And if donors to political causes are allowed to hide behind the thin veil of privacy, then our system will spiral out of control.

Now, as regards what people do with this information, THAT is another question. I see nothing wrong with boycotting businesses. I see nothing wrong with telling them why they are being boycotted. The line, of course, should be drawn at harassment and threatening people. The challenge for gay folk will be to remain within the law. Just because a few people might cross that line, however, is no reason to cry foul on the rest of us or to invoke a non-existent right to privacy.

chris

Thanks for this article ... is there any reason you could not have included hyperlinks to the California Secretary of State web page or the one for Californians Against Hate.com? I want to start withholding my support for certain business ASAP!

Stephen

In the third option, the word could should be replaced with couldn't.

Tom

Yes. This is the way to win more friends and support through intimidation and confrontation.

That always works! Alienate your friends and give your enemies more ammunition.

Great idea guys. MLK is probably rolling over in his grave!

stephen

Really? Is it that important? It isn't the money that ended the proposition, it's the votes. Further, it was one state, not a national vote. Where is the "honor roll" of people who did donate money for Prop 8?

Again, it wasn't money that won, it's votes.

Instead of finding problems on why this was not passed in California - find solutions. Find solutions to get this passed in your own state, but productively.

Quit calling it hate, call it an opinion. Just because someone doesn't support gay marriage, doesn't mean they hate the gays. the thing I love about this county, is when someone has a different opinion, it's always "hate".

Instead of complaining about being outcast, show why you are the same and 'deserve' the same rights. In essence QUIT BITCHING.

And go gay.com for bad grammar, again. . . it's "I could NOT care less" If you "could care less" then you already have care.

stephen

Ya know, I looked at the list. I don't do any business with any of those companies anyhow.

I should boycott gay.com for their fucktarded "news stories" and for pushing hate.

Boycotting and sending nastygrams is just another form of hate. You are hating the ones you are accusing of hate. In essence, adding fuel to fire.

blah2323

Hammer H.'s comments are so true...but that's how Liberals are, they're right and everyone else is wrong (and we all know most gays are Liberals...)

blah2323

Stephen that's why gays are members of the party of hate: Democrats

Armor for Sleep

Let's set the record straight, people. Just because anger, vindication, spite, or another negative force inspires you to do something, it does not make the thing itself wrong. Boycotts are not wrong. Are you saying that the bus boycott that pushed civil rights for blacks so far shouldn't have happened because it was spiteful? Why are we acting like consuming is a responsibility that we have to big businesses to keep them in the money? We are under no obligation to buy people's products and give them money. They are the ones who decided to use what they received from our pockets and donate it to a cause we don't support. That sort of thing should be public information. If you found out that H&M (just pulled a random business out of a hat. i haven't actually looked at the list yet.) was spending it's profits to support the exploitation of child labor, you'd be just as guilty of supporting child labor if you continued to shop there. Boycotts are not malicious acts. Don't pretend they are. They are passive, peaceful protests. It is NOT harassment.

I'm not saying that this list couldn't lead to harassment, but that's not it's purpose and we have every right to know who's throwing money at causes we don't support.

As Justin said: This is awful. Not giving your patronage to a company that supported prop 8 is one thing. However, posting private citizen's residential information, is unethical and counterproductive.

Someone made the point that people are entitled to vote the way they wish in America and the majority rules. What they apparently failed to see is the difference between individuals voting, and businesses throwing money at campaigns. In case you were unaware, businesses actually DON'T have the right to do whatever they want with their money in this country. Businesses are NOT individual people and do not have the same rights.

For those that aren't convinced we can actually make a difference, that is a self fulfilling prophecy. If we fail to make a difference it will be because of the people who refused to even try.

BOTTOM LINE: Boycott what you want, but don't harass people. If you harass people, you're only supporting their cause by making yourself look like a jackass. But no one can legitimately call you a jackass for choosing to take your business elsewhere.

Jett

I couldn't vote on this gay.com article because I don't call people with beliefs other than my own "haters" or "bigots". Please stop your hate gay.com

Armor for Sleep

Oh and one more record needs to be set straight. Not all people who are against gay marriage are against gays. Many of them ARE haters and vote against it because they disapprove of gays. Many more vote the way they do out of the (what i personally consider misguided) notion that they need to protect the sanctity of marriage. These are the people that don't care for the most part what gays do in the privacy of their own homes, but marriage is something they consider sacred and not a matter of private, individual choice. To most of them marriage is God's business, not our (humanity's) business, to decide.

Most of these people CAN be accurately labeled bigots. Of course... so can most of us. Look up the definition of bigotry sometime. If you refuse to see where these people are coming from, you're just as bigoted.

Stuart

Dorothy Nielson, La Verne, CA
$150,000
Dorothy Nielson, a retiree of La Verne, CA gave: $150,000 on 8/8/08

Can you believe this??

A RETIREE gave more money than Ellen DeGeneres !!!

AngryGay

Most of the large donors were from outside of California trying to influence an issue that won't effect them. That just shouldn't be allowed. Until that changes, I say we should know who it is who is trying to control our elections.

Jphineas

many of the people who voted Yes on 8 were intimidated by their churchs. Many pastors told congregations the risked eternal damnation and Elder Russell M. Nelson of the Quorum of the Twelve, in the October General conference of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day reitereated their position on marriage and that to deviate from it was tantamount to sin, Until We Meet Again ,http://lds.org/conference/talk/display/0,5232,23-1-947-28,00.html This was followed by an address from thomas S. Monson threatenting that a wicked life brings not just the damnation of hell but "eternal exile from God [which] may be the most searing anguish"

So how could an otherwise sympathetic person vote? Many would rather be quietly sympathetic and support us but would never risk their life, corporal or eternal, to help us. Especially when you have eloquent men whom you have trusted your soul to telling you that your political conviction will send you to hell?

Boycotting these companies wont work. What we need to do is organize, gather the information, present the evidence and have the non-profit status of churches who have contributed to the Yes on 8 campaign, overturned. This country has separation of church and state. The state has honored it long enough. Churches have started acting like Political Action Groups and now need to be treated as such. The USCCB is already near bankruptcy over pedophile priests, and the Mormon church holds more property than the Methodists, Lutherans, Presbyterians and Nazarene churches combined. If we made them pay property tax, and for the Mormons (who demand a full 10% of members gross income)income tax, these "churches" would either descalate their political activities or go bankrupt forcing their agendas onto the American Public.

Ruben

Just a few points:

(1) It is hypocritical and an oxymoron to be in the U.S. and still have "separate but equal" laws

(2) Civil rights are not a matter of public opinion - this issue should have never been voted on in the first place, the pursuit of happiness is for everyone, gay or straight

(3) There is nothing wrong with transparency on who funds what cause - Hey, every one is responsible for their actions. There is nothing wrong with boycotting; hit them in the pocketbook - it's the American way.

(4) Gays do have long term relationships - how can anyone deny that when 50% of straight marriages end in divorce?

(5) I do have a job AND I own a small business -so I have a lot to do!! I choose to be informed, active and vocal when there are injustices

(6) Passing Proposition 8 is harassment!

Degranged Member

You have the right to donate to a cause and NOT have the entire country find out about it... This makes me angry because I don't think that they should've been given to the public. I think gay people just want to know who to blame so they can add more people to the list of gay haters. And that list changes as much as fashion does.

Jonathan

Yes this is America, and voting is a very important part of our political system, but the rationality of "sometimes you win some, Sometimes you loose", is completely not applicable to this situation. This isn;t even a time when there should be a vote. We are all people like everyone else and dont deserve to have our rights denied. So many of the comments i read here are so discouraging. Posters ar ok with getting just a small pieceo f the pie, to be dictated to and controlled. Using comments referring to your own community as if you are a part of it. Its not the gay community, its our community. We all need ot stand together. posters want to say we areall being intolerent of people who dont approve of us, if we werent being attacked there would be no fight. We all jsut want to be free to live our lives. Their being straight doesnt affect me, why should my being gay matter to them. Nobody has to like me but let me live and be free.

still shocked

You guys are just shameful in harassing these people. So how would you like it if your names were released and you were harassed for voting for campagining for Obama?

I have to also say FYI, for the most vociferous of you, as a gay black man, I voted for prop 8 because I felt like alot of the propoganda was most hypocritcal. They tried to capitalize upon the civil rights movement and claim that this was about equality, when, for the most part, the gay community is one of the most exclusive and "whites only" clubs around. Even at the ivy league school I atteneded, I had to brace myself to be called a nigger if I were to approach a white gay. It was amazing, and many of them my own classmates and less than 5 years ago.

My opinion is get your own house in order before you try to change society.

Jphineas

To Still Shocked,

The NO on 8 campaign, unlike Yes on 8, did successfully prove that there contributors were being harrassed. SEcond of all, this let it be mentality only leads us backwards. The religious right is aggressive, and if you read many of the mission statements of the companies that contributed they all want to bring "christian" "evangelical" or "God-fearing" laws back into this country.

If we let this rest with their victory on 8, they'll next go after the overturning of anti sodomy laws, Utah continually tries to pass back door prohibitions against homosexuality.

If we boycotted business, like they do, we aren't harassing them anymore than they harass us. Letting sleeping dogs lie, only lands us in the pound.

Still Shocked

Jphineas I do not recall any mention of harassment by Yes on Prop 8. But every day I see the news there appears to be some activists targeting Mormons or other groups. Its fine if you disagree with them, but people should not be persecuted for excercising their right to vote.
