eHarmony Ventures Into Gay Matchmaking

Gay Couple eHarmony has launched an online gay and lesbian matchmaking service called Compatible Partners. But will gays and lesbians support it?

On the one hand, there has to be some resentment out there: After all, eHarmony was dragged kicking and screaming into gay matchmaking. The company, founded by evangelical Christian/clinical psychologist Neil Clark Warren, only agreed to create a same-sex dating service as part of a settlement with the New Jersey attorney general after a gay man sued for discrimination back in 2005 because eHarmony refused to accept gays as clients.

Gay Baby Bust

Gay dads I love children -- I really do -- and they like me. But I've never wanted the responsibility and bother of my own babies (or, heaven forbid, my own teenagers).

Gay Anti-Discrimination: Good News From Gainesville

Restroom_205 Gainesville, Florida, upon first glance, wouldn't be one of the cities at the top of my list known for much tolerance of LGBT issues. But, I'm happy that over half of the Gainesville residents who participated in the March 24th vote to maintain current anti-discrimination protections for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender residents just proved me wrong.

Almost 60% of the voters gave a thumbs down to a measure that would have stripped away an anti-discrimination ordinance, which also includes protections for transgender residents to use a male or female public restroom of their choice. Most importantly, the ordinance protects the city's LGBT community against job and housing discrimination.

Surrounded by notoriously conservative northern Florida, should Gainesville now be considered a "gay-friendly" city -- or was it simply the high turn out of liberal-minded University of Florida students who were responsible for swinging the vote more toward equality?

No Bachelorette Parties Allowed

Dv1486021 A gay bar seems like the perfect place for a straight girl to have her bachelorette party. They’ll get great music, fabulous cocktails and wall-to-wall hot, sweaty and shirtless boys who run absolutely no risk of putting the moves on them. And the gays should love it too, right? Well what about the fact that the young ladies are celebrating one thing that’s actually denied the rest of the patrons…marriage?

Senator Kerry Seeks Asylum For Gay Brazilian

John Kerry Having been raped and discriminated against in Brazil, Genesio Oliveira applied for asylum in the U.S. but was denied and forced to go back to his native country in August 2007, leaving behind his husband Tim Coco, an American citizen he wed in Massachusetts in 2005.

But the couple will be reunited if Senator John Kerry has his way. The Massachusetts Democrat has brought the matter to the attention of the Obama administration, urging U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder via a letter this week to overrule a lower court ruling and grant Oliveira asylum, The Boston Globe reports.

The Pope, Condoms & HIV/AIDS: Need Some Positive, Helpful Ideas

Pope Benedict XVI Here’s the world, at least in terms of HIV/AIDS, in 2009:

- There are over 22 million people living with HIV in Africa;
- There are over 5 million people living with HIV in Asia;
- There are over 1.7 million people living with HIV in Latin America;
- There is ample evidence “abstinence-only education” has led to an increase in HIV infection rates.
- There is ample evidence condom use dramatically reduces the rate of HIV infection.
- Most important of all, here in the spring of 2009, to quote that old La Tour song (that I could never quite cabbage patch to): “People are still having sex!”

Vermont Senate Approves Marriage Bill

GaymarriagevermontWith a vote of 26 - 4, The Vermont Senate approved a bill on March 23 that would legalize same-sex marriage -- and now the bill goes to the Democratic-controlled House, where passage is expected.

However, Republican Governor Jim Douglas will most likely veto the bill, and stated last week: "I've made my position quite clear that I believe marriage is and ought to remain the union of a man and a woman, that our civil unions law affords equality of opportunities and rights under state law and that that should suffice."
