Where's the Action Mr. President?
Since his election, President Obama has been slow to make good on his promises to the LGBT community. Most of the communications (around repealing Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell, for instance) have been along the lines of actions will be taken when the time is right. Even prominent gay leaders have been making excuses for the administration noting either that there are too many issues on the plate right now, the administration is still new to office and change takes time, or that everything is being prioritized.
Those excuses are starting to wear thin. Especially when the Department of Justice did not have too much on their plates to draft an insulting brief supporting the Defense of Marriage Act for a federal court last week. As expressed in a New York Times editorial, “the brief insists it is reasonable for states to favor heterosexual marriages because they are the “traditional and universally recognized form of marriage.” In arguing that other states do not have to recognize same-sex marriages under the Constitution’s “full faith and credit” clause, the Justice Department cites decades-old cases ruling that states do not have to recognize marriages between cousins or an uncle and a niece.”
Yup, you read that right. The Department of Justice, under the Obama-Administration-of-Change, likened same-sex marriages to incestuous unions. In an open letter to the administration, the president of the Human Rights Campaign Joe Solmonese said, “I cannot overstate the pain that we feel as human beings and as families when we read an argument, presented in federal court, implying that our own marriages have no more constitutional standing than incestuous ones.”
The action has even led some prominent gay activists, including blogger Andy Towle of Towleroad, to announce that they are declining to attend a Democratic fundraiser scheduled for next week, hosted by out congressmen Barney Frank and Tammy Baldwin. In declining Towle said, "I've had concerns about the lack of movement from the administration on LGBT issues for some time now but I wasn't comfortable attending after that DOMA brief came out."
If this is the last straw for you, or if you are willing to give the administration a chance but still want to express your frustration with the Department of Justice’s decision, we invite you to leave a comment below. We will write a letter of concern to President Obama and forward it with your comments to the White House. Make your voice heard.
This really was the last straw for me. I understand how politics works, and I understand carefully dolling out your political capital. So I was willing to be patient as long as there was some movement behind the scenes, and and overall improvement in the tone of the conversation. Those things happened. Clinton's improvement of the Department of State's policies concerning domestic partner benefits, the signing of the international treaty calling for the decriminalization of homosexuality, and various quotes from lawmakers made me comfortable with where things stood. If no major progress has taken place by the mid term elections then votes might fly differently, but I was willing to hold out and see.
This brief throws all of that out the window. Being patient doesn't mean I am willing to be a political token to be tossed around as needed. Even with the argument that it is the Department of Justice's constitutional duty to defend laws against challenge, it didn't have to be defended on these terms. Unless this situation is fixed I will throw my vote to someone else, or stay home if there isn't a decent independent candidate come 2004.

One must ponder how sweeping equality and change would feel to a child who is contemplating suicide because he knows he is different. I wonder how those children would feel in rural Nebraska when they see the leaders of this nation embrace them. Instead, we have those leaders stating incest and child marriage and correlating it to the innate sexual feelings that child contemplates 24/7. Why am I not worth as much as my best friend? One can only hope that the profound and outspoken nature of this administration will not only embrace equality for ALL, but will be the leaders they assured us they would be. So far, they haven't let me down as a widowed (gay relationship) man, as I had nothing before they entered office but hope; instead they have let down the millions of children hoping for open arms to lead them from the mind altering questions that consume their achievements and success. I hope Mr. Obama understands this isn't a call from myself or others like me who have faced this constant adversity for our entire lives, but for them to eliminate it for the children behind us who replay the hate day after day in schools, on playgrounds, and in basic societal standard. Do what is right Mr. Obama for ethical purposes, not policial ones.

I think its very sad the first black president is dragging his heels about doing away with discriminatory policies.
Posted by: Anthony Stewart | June 17, 2009 at 10:35 AM
Dear President Obama,
I cannot express my sadness in your administrations support of the DOMA. I do not want for myself or any family and friends special rights, but equil rights seem fair. To actually use decades old cases referring to marriage between cousins and close blood relatives, incest, is not only offensive it is inexcusible.
I have been with my spouse for 32 years, hoping and praying that one day our rights would be better. To have rights in the hospital for each other, survivors benefits, taxes, on and on. We have an amazingly wonderful 10 year old son, but we have had to jump throug hoops to be sure he would not lose both Dads if one of us die.
Please rethink these issues. You certainly are dealing with more information than we are, but it creates enemies when the old rhetoric of the BUSH era is used to demean, belittle and brush aside a vibrant and wonderful part of our nation
Thank you so much for all your work--our family is still supporting you as our president.

Dear Mr. Obama,
Get off your can and give us the rights we deserve. Gay marriage should not be upto the states. That's just a way to pass the buck. Just give us what you promised. Without our support you will not be elected again. No rights No vote!

I am stunned and saddened. I worked hard for your election and am embarrassed by the language in the brief filed in support of DOMA. Continued silence and inaction would have been far preferable.
When added to the fact that we're still in two wars and Guantanamo is still open, I struggle to find the words to convey my sense of loss.
These will have to do.

He has caved to the Republican Party on every issue.
He has paid off bankrupt companies that have powerful lobbyists.
He has increased the wars for profit funding the largest private army of mercenaries ever.
He is caving on health care.
He has begun to shut to windows of governmental transparency.
He has backtracked on his promise to fund science and environmental change.
All to appease Republicans and Democrats with powerful lobbyists.
This is a bone tossed to liberals to appease the mess he's making of his political capital.

Dear Mr. President,
I saw you speak here in Jacksonville, Florida, and I campaigned for you as practically the lone Obama supporter in a very conservative area called, somewhat portenteously, "Confederate Point."
All my fondest hopes in life are tied to achieving full civil equality with my heterosexual neighbors. I suffered through the passage of Florida's recent constitutional amendment banning gay marriage in the most formal and hurtful way imaginable. I urge you to turn your attention to exercising some leadership in the civil rights struggle we are fighting across this nation. Playing it safe and trying to be bipartisan is not going to convince the religious right to call off the dogs on LGBT people. "Nobody follows an uncertain trumpet," they say, and we desperately need you to begin taking a position on our side in our battle to win equal rights and recognition in the United States.
Thank you for your time.

I cannot express the growing anger and frustration I have with President Obama. I am tired of people saying things like- "Normal" the majority decides what is "Normal" and that means hetro's get to decide. Only when people understand that being gay is genetic, and I cannot choose that or my eye, skin color or race will we stop being discriminated against. What would happen if you took the word gay out of most of these discussions and said blue eyed or black skinned? I understand that we have made strides, however being considered akin to a pedophile is bad enough- I thought that would stop when I renounced being Catholic! Marriage Sacred? Tell that to Larry King who I believe has 7 Ex Wives, Or Liza or Michael Jackson- very sacred indeed. Civil Unions are like being able to ride on the bus-but having to sit in the back. Yes you are on the bus- but it's not just the same..Is it President Obama?

So is this the "change" you were expecting?
When will you folks wake-up and see he does not care about the community. All he really cares about is himself.
Oh that is right when its election time again, he will remember us again, and just like before you all will forgive him and accept the lies and get nothing in return.
Hope you all enjoy this new wave of "change" that you all ate up. ENJOY

Obama better get with the program if he wants a second term. He's been no different than the Republicans on the LGBT rights.
Posted by: R. Smith Jr | June 17, 2009 at 11:24 AM
I would like to say that this isn't right on so many levels. I mean comparing incestous (sp?) relations to gay marriage when they are completely different things. I mean if I wanted to marry the man I love, I would want that recognition and right to marry the guy. I'm new to all this and like Andrew said above that there are children and even teenagers that are thinking about suicide because they have no one to go to. I should know I was one of those teens wanting to do the unspeakable, until I talked to a good friend about me being gay. Anyway back to the point, find something else to compare gay marriage to, instead of incest.

I find it sadly amusing our first black President finds "separate but equal" to be a valid and defensible stance for civil rights. It has been clear since the campaign that Obama is no friend of the gay community. The lies about promised actions, however, the sound cuts of the gay minister's prayer at inauguration at white house instruction, the timing of the announcement of appointment for Supreme Court to deflect attention from the Prop 8 decision.
Obama intends to do absolutely nothing for the LGBT community. That should have been painfully clear at the start with the appointment of Emanuel. The pride with which Emanuel denied LGBT access to Clinton and his pride in declaring you either agree with the President or you do not get in to him through me...
Apparently to the current administration and DNC, the LGBT community is good for photo ops to "prove" how inclusive they are, and little to nothing else. "Look how inclusive we are! We have you guys for the Easter Egg Roll!" Meanwhile, all the LGBT issues are removed from the white house website. DOMA and DADT still stand with more and more reports of staffers laughing and joking about it being repealed...never.
No money to the DNC until they make good on some promises. If they want money, send them an Easter Egg. Obama is a bigot, and it is plainly evident in the emotion that crosses his face every single time a question about the marriage acts or LGBT issues is brought up in press conferences. Watch any news conference with him, the look of disgust and derision that crosses his face instantly with any of these questions speak volumes. It says, 'No I won't'.
Boycott California products. Sink that economy. Why would anyone within the LGBT community spend on penny in that state? No money to the DNC. If the LGBT community has the most disposable income (as is oft made note), let's not spend a penny of it where it is doing us no good.
Watts had to burn to get civil rights decades ago. What must we do to gain our rights?
Posted by: Scott Lichtman | June 17, 2009 at 11:32 AM
I honestly liken this country to a social prison. People believe that we our a free country, and granted there are far worse places to be, but there are also BETTER countries to live in. Ones where the government actually fulfills its promises, usually out of fear of its citizens, and serves them, rather that this countries long standing fear of its own government.
We are not treated as a free people if our basic rights are being denied because I wont stick my penis into a vagina. It's ridiculous!
As far as the economy goes, heres and idea. The american academy of engineers rates our power grid a D. It's little more than a series of extension cords. We have plenty of unemployed engineers out there. Revamping the power grid in the US is not only necessary to prevent further problems, but it could provide work for tons of people. The project would likely last a few decades too! This is something that has been turned down constantly because of short sighted CEOs and yet, I have a feeling that it will be addressed before gay marriage, yet another untapped financial goldmine.
We restrict things because we believe it is right, but so few actually consider what is right. Even when you think of it in a cold and mechanical way, gay marriage makes so much sense! It would benefit everyone!
Posted by: monsterousmonster | June 17, 2009 at 11:33 AM
what a big shock this is! a politician (especially a democrat) not keeping his word...yet?! i cant believe this has happened! ...yeah right. all you gays were so caught up in his change and lies and now look. he has homophobes in his administration and he HIMSELF believes marriage is solely between a man and woman but you dumb homos would have realized all that if you opened your eyes and actually did some research but now your screwed and you deserve it.
Posted by: mike | June 17, 2009 at 11:43 AM
Mr. President,
I campaigned for you. I didn't stop talking to people about the change you would bring to the United States and I did so until the very last few minutes before the election results(which I attended at grant park). I remember feeling elated when you included "gay and straight" to your list of people who should be equal during your speech. The news from the department of justice broke my heart. I'm 23 and now at the age where I am starting to think about my romantic future. It's more important to me now than it has ever been before. I want you to know that support of DOMA is hurtful to millions of GLBT people in this country. We only want to be able to marry the people we love, which is no different from your relationship with your wife. You of all people should understand civil rights and the freeing effect it has on oppressed people. Please do what's right for me and my fellow countrymen. Thank you.

Dear fellow faggotry,
Getting "angered" and "outraged" will not help.
Instead, let's redouble our efforts, our resources and more importantly re-focus our attention.
To be entirely fair, what IS the difference between incestuous marriage, gay marriage or straight marriage.
It's a legal union between consenting adults. That union entitles the married parties to certain benefits under law.
If the parties are blood relatives, more than 2, both male, both female, whatever ... all of that should be entirely irrelevant.
Instead of thinking of same sex marriage as homophobia, it should be thought of as sexism.
Instead of thinking of blood relative marriage as incest discrimination, it should be thought of as reverse nepotism.
This is a greater issue of ADULT UNIONIZATION. Are we sane, consenting adults or are we not?
CHURCH deals with the sacrament of marriage.
STATE deals with legal arrangements.
To say that someone cannot legally unionize oneself to another of the same blood or same sex is unnecessarily restrictive and against human rights.
If your CHURCH does not permit a sacrament to be held between 2 people for whatever reason, that has NO impact on state affairs.
Ergo the LGBT community should refocus their efforts away from "Gay Marriage" and put it's focus on the human rights being violated by all.
Show conservative heterosexuals how THEY are impacted negatively. If it's truly a human rights issue then maintaining legislation against "Adult Unionization" should reflect it increased hospital bills, increased taxes due to unnecessary government expenses. These are issues which affect everyone DIRECTLY and FINANCIALLY.
This idea of Human Rights and Adult Unionization where our focus should be put, our efforts redoubled and our resources placed.

I urge every gay citizen to carefully think about your vote next election. Obama promised a lot of things that he has not fulfilled, and this DOMA brief shows his true feelings about gay people. I'm not saying that you should vote for the republicans in 2012 (because they're even worse when it comes to this issue), but remember that there are other parties that one can vote for.
A lot of gay people fought hard for Obama, volunteered, defended him on the internet, and stood up for his message of change, and this is the pay back we get?
It's time to show that we have a voice in elections and that our vote really counts when electing a new president, so with our vote being absent from the major parties next election should send the message that we have had enough.
To play with people's lives for politics is disgusting and should not go unpunished. I don't want to get too racy about stuff, but as a black man, Obama, more than anyone, should understand that.
Step up, or get out!

President Obama,
I voted for you...my whole family and most of my friends voted for you.My teachers and co-workers voted for you. In fact, most of us even campaigned for you. We took to the streets and convinced a nation to vote for you under the banner of change. I still support you and think overall you are handling everything well, considering the huge mess you inherited from the Bush era. However, you made a lot of promises and I hope you do your best to keep those promises--not just to the LGBT community, but to all Americans. I know that change takes time and that your administration is facing huge issues right now,but you've been able to take on some smaller issues at the same time and this needs to be one of them. LGBT issues may seem like a waste of time to some, but they are issues that affect nearly every aspect of our lives. Please keep good on your promises. We support you. Thank you,President Obama.

Posted by: Bruce Lima | June 17, 2009 at 12:30 PM
I think it's time for Mr. Obama to start making changes today and not after he is re-elected to office in for his second term. I would have more respect for anyone who went into office for 4 years and make significant change but wasn't re-elected for 4 more because some people disagreed. Today we are supposed to hear about Federal Government Employees receiving DP benefits. How about the military members serving every day afraid of being booted if someone finds out they are gay. They are Federal Employees but they will not receive these benefits as Mr. Obama sits on the side-lines and refuses to open the closet door. As a veteran, I wore my uniform proudly and left the military because I couldn't be the person God made me.
As for the Justice Departments comparison of our relationships to those of uncles and nieces, this is beyond offensive. Why does the government turn a blind eye to the number of Catholic Priests molesting children or the number of straight married men molesting children to hurl insults at me. How would Mr. Obama feel if this same Justice System help up the old rules of no whites and blacks marrying; all blacks to the back of the bus; or even how about the same system denying a black man the right to be elected to the highest office in this country.
Mr. Obama, its time to act and not talk! Give up the speeches and start acting. I don't expect you to pass special treatment laws just fair and equal laws. Remove religion from the decision making process and honor the seperation of church and state this country is supposed to be build on. Mr. Obama, the change is coming and it's the right thing to do. Do you want to be remembered as the man who was willing to make changes and not just talk about them or would you prefer to leave that to someone else? The election is less than 4 years away and right now, my ballot is up for grabs by an a man or woman of action.

Then the benefits he was promising federal employees was a ruse. I am highly angered and upset, I agree with the above blogs, I don't have much more to add to what has been said, other than I'm tired of this discrimination. He does think of himself, look at the money he has spent and the vacations and the casual attitude everything is fine routine. You know some of us have been waiting (years) for a better life. Why can't we just get are equal rights like we deserve, like everyone else in this country. When is the flag going to fly its true colors of freedom for all.

C'mon now, is anyone "really" surprised? Political pandering to get votes from one group or another isn't new, but ya know what? Come next election, the same people will make the same promises and the same voters will vote the same way.
And as for the comments about Obama and "his" Dept of Justice caving to conservatives? Give us a break and get a life.

This message board system really needs to require planetout.com or gay.com member signatures in order to post. The right-wing trolls need to be identified. A single Freeper (that's a right-wing troll who's fond of FreeRepublic.com, just like von Brunn, the museum-shooter) can sway online polls or deluge message boards. I find it suspect that, according to exit polls, 75% of the LGBT community voted for President Obama, yet whenever I come to a message board here it seems like more than half of the comments are hostile to the President. That just doesn't make sense.
GAY.COM, REQUIRE MEMBER SIGNATURES! DON'T LET TROLLS HIDE BEHIND ANONYMITY!

I am a Canadian so my opinion does not really matter.
But I dont get the big deal in this dont ask dont tell thing.
If you are gay and wana be out then dont be a soilder.
If you wana be in the closet then fine be a soilder.
Seems very simple to me.
There is always give and take in life.
We choose whats the most important for use.
For me it was being a out gay man I lost some things in my life ie: famlily, frinds, and moved to a new town but for me it was worth it.
So I say stop all your whining and spend your time on some thing worth while.
Or move to Canada we have very libral laws on such things here :)
You cant always have your cake and ice cream and eat it to. Atleast not all in the same day.

i am not entirely surprised by the presidents behavior and actions, but i am truly saddened. i had hope he wasnt lying to us simply to get elected. but as soon as i saw that gluttonous bigot rick warren given the invocation i knew we were screwed from the start. that told me he thought of us as nothing and the feelings of every free thinking non traditionally religious person were made clearly thought of as easily ovrlooked and blithely pushed aside. doma defensive language comparing our relationships to incest, dont ask dont tell being defended by the administration instead of a stop -loss order from the president are both clear signs to me he thinks we are insignificant and immoral. im truly ashamed at this moment that i worked my ass off camapigning for him. what a joke as usual, the only difference is democrats pretend to give a damn about us instead of openly hating us like republicans.
Posted by: kevin | June 17, 2009 at 12:54 PM
This wasn't the last straw. I hit that after the first 100 days.
"Don't Ask, Don't Tell" is a presidential order as Commander in Chief.
If this president doesn't have the five minutes it takes to draft an order that says "Gays can serve openly in the military", then when IS he going to find the time? When he's seeing a show and dinner with his wife? Planting veggies in the garden?
The gay community was suckered into voting for this man, and helped get him elected by making John McCain evil. McCain was on record as not having an issue with gays in the military because he'd served with us during his military stint.
As with 8-year President B. Clinton, there will never be a right time. I had hopes Clinton would do some "last days" executive orders on the way out the door for the homosexual community, but we got the finger from him, too.
I had no expectations from Dumb-a-ya Bush. He couldn't even make a conservative happy.
Posted by: Dan L. | June 17, 2009 at 01:19 PM
kevin,
Not all Republicans openly hate homosexuals. I know several Democrats that do hate us, and some Republicans that don't.
Most people don't care. The last thing you want to do is antagonize those that don't care into caring in the wrong direction.
And even though you didn't say it directly, my interpretation of your comment is "The Democrats will tell us anything, even lie, to get elected, while the Republicans will tell the truth, even if it isn't popular". Kind of makes you wonder which side you should be on...

First of all, Tammy Baldwin is not a congressman, she's a congresswomen. Secondly, this is typical of American politics. When the Republicans are in power they do whatever they want without any regard for the Democrats. When the Democrats are in power they go out of there way to make sure whatever they do doesn't piss off the Republicans too much. We are the most expendable of his supporters during his campaign so his promises to us go out the window first.

Dear Mr President Obama,
I voted for you because of YOUR message. I do not vote along party lines...I vote for the individual.
In short sir, my belief is "actions speak louder than words".
There hasn't been any actions on your part for the gay community. Actually since you took office there hasn't been much talk either. The gay community helped get you elected and now that you are "in" I guess it will be politics as usual.
Shame for shame. But that's ok. Karma has a way of rearing its ugly head a biting those in the ass who severely deserve it.
IE: Hillary Clinton, GM, CHRYSLER, the banks and various mortgage companies, Maddorf, AIG...the list goes on.
You, Mr President were HIRED my the American People to do a job. If you can speak the language of Islam then you can speak the ENGLISH language of Gay Americans and fulfill your promises!

I have to say one thing. When I was growing up and learning about the United States Government in History, I learned that the governments job is to do the will of the Majority while protecting the rights of the Minority. We are the minority how can they continually stomp on our rights because the majority disagrees. We arn't asking for anything that physically harms anyone else. All we want is for two consenting adults who love each other very much to be considered a union in the eyes of the state, not the church but the state. Which are supposed to be separated. I used to believe that people in general would do what is right, but I guess I am wrong.

I hate to say it but I think Barack was a "bait-n-switch" candidate. The LGBT community would have MUCH better off with Hilary Clinton I believe.
I never thought I would EVER make any comparison between Bush and Obama that was favorable to Bush but I will make one now: At least Bush was very open about his beliefs and positions and kept his promises to his base. I feel USED by Obama and he can't count on MY vote in 2012.

This is why I am proud to live in the truly free country of Canada, where being homosexual doesn't make you a second class citizen.

Why would anyone put faith in one politician to change social attitudes and norms? It is not and has never been in any politician's interest or nature to do so. Barak Obama, like so many others before him, pandered to the LGBT special interest groups during his election campaign in order to get our vote. Need I remind everyone of Bill Clinton's lone contribution to LGBT rights: "Don't ask don't tell"! It is up to each one of us us to work for the changes at a grass-roots level at our jobs, schools, families, churches, neighborhoods, and local governments. The politicians will then follow, because they seldom lead. Wake up everyone! Obama is no different.

we need a face for the LGBT community. We can't be treated as second class citizens when we pay taxes each year. They don't want to give us all our rights then we shouldn't have to pay taxes. makes me so mad

Oh,this is precious! All you Kool-aid drinking liberals who can't think for yourselves voted this ass-clown into office. And now you are disenchanted with him. Gee, ya think? I predicted this would happen. If you had taken even one minute to think independently of the mindless gay following of the democrat party, you would have realized this. I venture to say that a year from now, you won't find even 10% of the people who voted for this Marxist who will admit it. Shame on you.
