Do We Need LGBT Studies?

Male Student When I went to college, LGBT studies classes were pretty much unheard of, but they're all the rage these days. Schools ranging from UCLA to the University of Maryland offer LGBT studies courses and programs. But do we really need them?

I got to thinking about this today when I read that the Harvard Gay & Lesbian Caucus has raised $1.5 million to fund an endowed professorship in LGBT studies at Harvard University. Reportedly the first of its kind, this endowed professorship will allow the school to hire visiting professors who will come in for a semester at a time to teach classes on sexuality and sexual minorities.

Third-Grader Organizes Gay Equality Rally

Activists are getting younger and younger these days. Have you heard about Ethan? The Colorado third-grader recently organized a rally to promote marriage equality for gays and lesbians as well as equal protection under the law.

Yes, this little boy—with some help from his mom and a teacher—put together a rally for gay equality, getting the necessary permits, finding speakers and making the community aware of the event, which was held this past Saturday in Denver on the steps of Colorado's Capitol. Two hundred people attended. Not a bad turnout!

While Denver Mayor John Hickenlooper couldn't make it, he did issue a proclamation declaring May 16th "Marriage Equality and Equal Protection For All Day."

As for what inspired this little boy to speak out for gay rights, Ethan decided to hold the rally after he found out that a same-sex couple who lives in his neighborhood and has a child are not allowed to wed in Colorado.

You've got to love this kid. Check out this video of him speaking at the rally:

Trump Delivers Miss Cali Verdict

Donald Trump Hold on to your tiaras: Miss California Carrie Prejean is keeping her crown. Donald Trump, who co-owns the Miss Universe Organization (parent of the Miss U.S.A. and Miss Universe pageants), made the announcement at a press conference in New York City this morning.

Prejean faced the possibility of losing her title after some sexy photos of her surfaced. The whole brouhaha over the pictures was ridiculous. In my opinion, they were no more scandalous than a Maxim magazine photo spread. Trump agreed.

Married Hands Maine has legalized gay marriage, making it the fifth state to do so, and, more specifically, the fourth state in New England to do so. Aside from Maine, we can also get hitched in Massachusetts, Connecticut and Vermont.

Get New Hampshire and Rhode Island onboard, and all of New England will allow gay marriage.

What if the World Treated AIDS Like Swine Flu?

Swine Flu As of 6 p.m. GMT on May 4, 2009 the World Health Organization (WHO) confirmed 1,085 cases of swine flu in 21 countries worldwide with 26 confirmed deaths, and reports seem to show the illness is leveling off. For now at least.

By the end of 1981, just 7 months after the first press report mentioning a rare disease in gay men, at least 121 people died from what would become known as Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome.

No Gays Near Joe the Plumber's Kids

Joe the Plumber Ah, Joe the Plumber, the election ended in November and your candidate lost, but for some reason people still think your opinion matters. Why, I have no idea—oh wait, is it because you published a book and hired a PR agent? Why you're still being interviewed and people are quoting you is beyond me. The latest: Christianity Today.
